As far as "how to make it in the afterlife" goes there is some truth to that. While one should give glory to God, if someone refuses to do that then maybe the pagans had a point. Maybe they should at the least, leave behind something for those that came after them to remember them for. It is partly pride of course but it is also about a desire not to live in vain. "If I can ease one heart the aching...", etc, etc.
