A New Kind of Fundamentalism |
by Regis Nicoll |
To the enlightened elite it is unthinkable to cede any limit to human understanding. If some poor fellow should suggest the incomprehensibility of the universe absent a “higher power,” he’ll quickly find himself banished from polite society, charged with committing the unpardonable sin of invoking the “God of the gaps.” Yet those who dismiss him as a glassy-eyed fundamentalist trapped in the “demon-haunted world” of religious superstition are drones of a fundamentalist movement all their own: materialism.
To read more about this new brand of fundamentalism and the quicksand upon which it is built, see my new BreakPoint article, “Breaking the Spell of Materialism.”
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed your article. I've always said that though I was raised in a Christian family, my studies in math and science have only deepened by respect for God. The more I learn, the more I understand what a truly awesome universe God created.
I'm also happy to report that I've experienced a much more temperate climate, one where scientists and seekers do not suppose to be in an either-or dichotomy. I'm grateful for that.

Brain,
I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. I praise God that throughout my science education and 30-year career, He has helped me understand that science is not the lone portal to all knowledge, but a tool to help man manage and enrich creation while being awed by it's elegance, intricacy and design.
