The Remains of Jesus Uncovered!

That’s right! At least according to award-winning filmmakers James Cameron and Simcha Jacobovici, whose documentary to that effect will be shown later this year on the Discovery Channel, among other places.

How did they come across such a sensational find? It all goes back to the 1980 discovery of a cave in a backwater neighborhood in Jerusalem in which six coffins were scribbled with the names: “Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son -- the filmmakers claim).” Then after DNA analysis and “close work with world-famous scientists,” Cameron and company concluded that the cave contained Jesus’ remains.

But there are several things quite odd about this. First off, the names Mary, Joseph and Jesus are some of the most common names in early Palestine. Second, although DNA could establish the relationships between the remains of those in the cave, it is incapable of singling out any one of them as being Jesus of Nazareth. Third, nothing is mentioned about crucifixion forensics. Fourth, Amos Kloner, the archaeologist who wrote the official report on the cave ten years ago, concluded that the "'possibility of it being Jesus' family [is] very close to zero.' Motti Neiger, spokesperson for the Israel Antiquities Authority, agreed 'that chances of these being the actual burials of the holy family are almost nil.'"

In fact, if this cave did contain the remains of Jesus it would be nigh impossible to verify 2000 years later. That said, in the days, weeks and months after Jesus’s death, it would have been certain--an important point to keep in mind.

Both the Jewish leadership and the Roman authorities were not only highly motivated to quash any resurrection ruse, but had the political muscle and wherewithal to extract confessions and find the body, if indeed it existed. That no body was ever found is reflected in the extra-biblical account by the Jewish historian, Josephus, in the late first century:

Now there was about this time Jesus… [the] Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day; as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day. (Antiquities 18.3.3)

I’m sure that Cameron’s film will get its share of media attention—maybe enough to put Anna and Britney “beneath the fold.” All the same, this whole exercise—a filmmaker doing archaeology—reminds one of a certain politician doing climate science. But that’s a whole other story.

Ok... I have to give credit where credit is due... The CSI Jerusalem was coined by Glenn Beck on his show tonight. Well, everyone is talking about James Cameron's new movie claiming to have found Jesus' remains. Which is preposterous [Read More]

I just finished watching the film and to tell you the truth it was a horrible display of archeology. There are so many holes in the story. They assume Jesus and Mary M. were married and block out the whole findings from the Lab. The Ted Copple Interview after was the best part because the filmaker couldn't really defend his film against those who don't even believe in Jesus. The film was highly entertaining from a documentary standpoint but its like the davinci code in its loose facts and flailing interpretations. My guess is they ran out of money and supporters pushed this thing forward with what they could paper chain together just to see if they could make some of their money back. At one point the filmaker jumps into the tomb and squashes a whole bunch of biblical text and documents then kindof jokes about the fact they are standing and sitting on historical text. They took way to many liberties and failed to prove without a doubt that this was or is Jesus. They never finished DNA evidence on the rest of the boxes, they never looked at the corpses before to see how they died like i dunno maybe like crucified, which would leave significant marks on a skeleton. They assumed everything first then tried to prove only those facts and gave none that would condem their notions like true journalism should. This is almost all fiction.

I posted my last message before reading the rest of the comments. I am a deacon at a local church in Maryland. It seems that unbelivers do not take the bible as fact as we do because they are not under its laws or morals so stating from it does no good. Those of you who don't believe in Jesus or God I ask you to test it. Our Bible states that you have the right and must test all things to see if they truly come from God.(That is for us christians) I must admit that after watching the documentary I can understand why those who don't believe would come to the conclusion that this was a factual film and that they now have the basis to totally disregard God and Jesus. Jesus is the cornerstone of the christian belief so to discredit him tears down its foundation and could prove that faith false. Now is where I appeal to those of you who are intelligent enough to determine for yourselves what is right and what is fiction. I ask you to Test God!. Test the Bible truly. The best way to get the answers is to find out for yourself what is right. After all no one can make you mind up but you. Jesus has instructed me to Love all of you out there. Yes that means those who would disrespect him or fail to love him the way I do. I ask you to test if God is right by veiwing as much evidence as you can. My hope and prayer is that you can find Jesus who will completely fill the hole in you that strides and lust for wrongdoing. Face it if you are not a perfect person and you can't do everything exactly right all the time them you need someone in your life that can. That person is Jesus. I will try to answer to the best of the knowledge that God gave me any questions you may have concerning Jesus, God or the Holy Spirit at ziner_dee@hotmail.com. I will only reply to those who genuinally have a question and not to those of you who would ask or speak disrespectfully. Thank you and may God Bless

Uh, when are we going to learn that the world we live in does everything it can to disprove and discredit anything biblical or pertaining to Jesus. This is just another ploy to get "people" to see Jesus didn't really rise from the dead so we can trash the whole Bibel thing. In this world where reason has gone bye bye, it works. Anyone who has studied the Scriptures, archaeology and history know for 100% fact these aint the bones fo Jesus. May this continue to spur us to pray for these people that in searching for truth they may find the Truth.

Darin Jensen

You don't have to be a nuclear physicist to appreciate that it "would be nigh impossible" to prove anything. Those who try are chasing the wind. And those who claim to know only prove their foolishness.

This subject is utterly meaningless; it has nothing to do with the Point.

Ho Hum here we go again with non believers messing with Bible truths.ZZZZZZZZZZ

dude what is up with this? We all know that jesus did not jump of the cross and have a kid with mary M. Just give it up!!!!!!!

to whom this may concern...(the point)you have posted my comment dtd march 3, 2007 under the name of terry burton. Can you make an amend to this? thank you. God bless.

I’m not normally one to comment on things like this, but this particular issue gave me a startling insight I think I would be remiss not to mention. Despite being a person of strong faith, I also consider myself intelligent and logical, and find that I have to take even things like this as a hypothesis that might be true, and then analyze the evidence. I admit have not seen the documentary itself, but I have read various articles about it and the findings it uses to draw its conclusions. Personally, I have come to the conclusion that, as one of the Israeli experts put it, the chances of this being the remains of the Jesus of the Bible are close to nil. I won’t rehash the arguments at length here – most of them have been made: the names being common first century names, the DNA tests that have not been done (no matter what the reason – the report presenting evidence as “conclusive” is at least premature, then, if all of the scientific investigation is not complete), and the idea that the gnostics could have forged the tomb during the same era (who cares when the carving was done?…the age of the patina in the lettering is irrelevant if there were known forgers with motive in the same time period).
But all that aside, as someone who couldn’t in good conscience just dismiss this as “Satan” or “Hollywood” trying to discredit Christianity without first doing some investigation and thinking of my own, I was forced to allow my mind to imagine “what if” this really was true. And the result was shocking. I had to consider the possibility that this life really is all there is. And for a few hours I experienced the most profound emptiness and despair I could ever have imagined. This was something I had never truly experienced, as I have been a Christian and held the idea of eternity and resurrection as reality since the age of five. I can’t remember ever not believing. So to experience this hopelessness was a shock to my system. I couldn’t help but wonder if this is what it feels like to face the reality of death and this life without faith, and as a result it stirred a compassion in me for those who do…every day.
So here’s to hoping that the Christian world, rather than just reacting to and dismissing the story as foolishness, or a hoax, will take the time to understand what a world without the hope of resurrection would really be like – and find a it a compelling reason to truly answer the valid questions of the unbeliever or atheist (I’ve been reading many articles from the atheist perspective as research for a novel, so they are on my mind…) – if possible.
Anyway, that’s my two cents. If it’s even worth that much. ;-)

BTW – I absolutely love Dan Brown’s books. There is a profound difference between fiction purported to be fiction (albeit using ingeniously woven half-truths to create a pseudo-historical background for a novel…nicely done, Dan!), and fiction (woven of similar partial truths) purported to be actual science. It is the latter that scares me. Let’s hope sensible people won’t be so easily fooled (although the number of people insisting that a work of fiction was truth doesn’t provide much encouragement…)

John Cupo

On the MPR website I googled Jesus' tomb.
A great deal of information is available on that site that refutes conviningly this latest and most devastating attack on Christianity. The two articals I would recomend as starters are: Y-Jesus The Jesus Family Tomb: Fact or Fiction--Was Jesus' Tomb Found.

The Message

Matthew 24:23 At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Peter 1:18-20
18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

John 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

John 20:24-30 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

The thing that makes me not think that the cave did not contain Jesus is the name of one of the people in it. "Matthew" is a Greek name. No person in the family of Jesus would have been named "Matthew". They were Jewish not Greek.

I clearly don't beleve in the god or jesus theary I mean look how rashonal life is... man made up what jesus did so that they can have somthing to reach out to wich to me is the absolute nothingness that bullcrap about jesus walking acrost the water is of corce of all things going agaist the laws of phisics is a huge fake just being rashonal here. They put this kind of fairytail to make society beleve this. Why? because society is insucure with them selvs All that was...was just a clever matafore used to personify the abstract of blind faith!! there clearenough for you? its not realistic at all heck we all make ourown miericals... so what! if a bolt of lighntning missed you by mere inches so what if the earths core is full of magma & burst though the surface and you dodged it in the nik of time god or jesus did'nt have anything to do with this whats so ever heck if thats not enough were surround by an astroid belt!. The point is that we are surounded by all types of deasaters even the ones we create ourselvs so if there wher a god why would he putt us in the middle of all these deasasters just to only prove hes there
and for man to say its the power fo god? Ill tell you because man made this up man is so so so insecure with them selvs in more ways than one that when It comes to Gays, man ofcores with there ubsessive pranoia they think that every guy out there is going to hit on them and there scared that they mite have these feelings. Let me tell you gaypeople has been around whay before the bible whay before man could even make paper for that matter!! being absalute rational like I said before. then some where along then along the lines as allways there is someone who see this and tellthem they are wrong fore doing this only just because they are inscure with them selvs then meny years down the road the bible comes in the picture just to make a long story short & states man shalt not lay with another man the only reason why there put this in here is because man fears that the human race is going to cometo a minimum there its like every one halft to be part of the BIG PICTURE & REAPRODUCE. If the whole world was streight don'nt you think it would be overpopulated? than it allready is? man throw stuff like this in the bible because they think everyone has to be PART OF THE BIG PICTURE of what man think they should be in order to be exepted & respected in our biggited society in other words if your gay and you want respect you halft to preatend to be somone ets streight! or you are gonig to die and go to hell and burn forever with all useless worthless people who idead had no place in this whole world just because there making man feal insucure with them selvs not being part of there big picture of what they think they should be. So I guess it realy makes god feel insecure with him self for you to be gay and gay isn;t even a choice!! I beleave that your born gay as you are streight the only reason why some people don't bealve this is a fact & they think its a choice is because society dumfounedly think that they can just easaly chaneg them or theyl change themselvs and the only way they can do this is to throw the bible at them you know the dying and going to hell theary in fact if you are bor this way don't you think ofcorce the bible is contradicting its self over and over agian? its like saying you halft to fores yourself to be streight that way everone will like you better heck do you think a streight person is going to force themself to be gay ?... I guess the real quetion is... is this a reatoral question? Im mean come on ofcorce not and if you are dumfouned by trying to be part of somones big picture of what they think you should be then your going to die and go to hell any way because now your living a (lie) and a (lie) is a sin to your not being who you realy are and I whould hate to go through life to answer to myself oneday asking my self why could'nt I live my life my ownway rather than to listen to what somone elts said on whats wright & whats wrong I don't about you but I don't whant to end up skampering runing endlessly from my past of all the years of preatending to besomthing I am not reaching old age one day that is not how I plan to go out fo my way of answering to my self I would take the time right now and live my life like its golden whats life if its agaist the rules to enjoy it?

Why people have to wonder if Jesus is or was real. If you have a relationship with him you would know that he is real. If you had a relationship with him you would be able to talk with him and he will talk back to you, you can feel him and know him. If you have never been in touch with
the Lord, then you have no reason to know him. If you are true believers, you would not have to speculate on if he is real or not or if he came back from the dead or not. It is all in "your faith and belief". If yo do not believe then you have no faith. Can't you feel him in your life? Can't you talk with him? I can.

God maybe using this to bring the knowledge of his son to the attention of the masses. It is certainly getting attention. I read the blog and there are people who did not know about Jesus, now they know. God is wonderful and the people will know who he is. Godspeed.
